I am retired Army law enforcement, and I am going stir crazy. (I too would
take a dumbbell, and even a jump rope, with me as a driver. Push-ups and
sit-ups / crunches can also be done anywhere and almost anytime)..I could
be hired and working as a Correctional Officer by the end of this month
(for a state in desperate need of employees), but now I think maybe my
second calling (career) is to be a professional driver (trucker). I thought
about it in the 1980’s (before my military career, when I was too young to
drive a truck) even when I would drive my car on the freeway to classes at
the local community college. My dad was a former US Air Force pilot who
always wanted to live (and travel) in an RV or trailer after retirement,
but my mom said “NO!!!” Hehehe I guess I inherited my dad’s love for travel
and not caring about being in the same place to sleep every day or week. I
lived in hotels my last 5 years in the Army, traveling from city to city in
a very large state, and I miss it (being financially middle-class
“homeless”/ transient status for days or weeks at a time) very much. I am
not the time-clock (8 hour shift) type of person. That is one reason I
loved the Army. Pay me decent / a livable wage at something enjoyable (even
if it is hard work), and I am HAPPY. Working in a prison (12-14 or even 16
hours a day) sounds DEPRESSING and NOT fun. Trucking is not for many
(everyone), but I seem to be the right personality type for this job. I am
not a party (social scene) person. My happiness comes from having a job I
enjoy, so I might really have to become a professional driver. The great
thing about the United States is that we have many career fields from which
to choose. We only live once, so why be miserable at work each day? I was
never envious of anyone when I was in the Army (I liked my career choice),
and I want my second (and last) career to make me happy. Life ROCKS when we
are fortunate to do what we want for a living =)
