There’s no other industry that has as many half-truths and falsehoods as the fitness industry. Today I’m going to go over the top 5 myths in the fitness world.
Some of you might disagree with me on some of these and that’s okay, let me know in the comments. BUT after contributing to Men’s Health magazine for over 10 years now, I’ve seen tons of fitness myths come and go.
So from my own personal experience and training 1000’s of clients, I’m going to share with you what I know to be the 5 biggest myths in fitness.
So what are they?…Here are the top 5 biggest myths in fitness:
# 1 – You have to do morning cardio on an empty stomach to lose fat — FALSE
I’ll start by saying this — there is research showing that you can burn proportionally more fat doing slow cardio on an empty stomach BUT you have to stop right there, because it doesn’t really matter.
There are tons of research studies showing that in the long run, cardio doesn’t work for weight loss. It might work to burn proportionally more fat of 100 calories, but if you’re only really burning 100 calories doing a slow workout in the morning, what’s that really going to do for you?
To me that is the #1 biggest myth in fitness and if you’re making that mistake you are probably not getting the results you really want.
#2 — Intervals burn muscle — FALSE
A lot of people think that if you do sprint training you are going to lose your muscle mass. This is not true. In fact what you’re going to do when you add interval training into your workout program is you are going to burn fat faster and maintain your lean body mass because you are not doing long cardio workouts.
It’s when you do long, long , long, long, LONG cardio workouts, if you are training for a marathon and you are not eating enough protein, that you will see a loss in muscle mass. So that’s when you lose muscle mass not with interval sprint training.
#3 –Drinking ice cold water will boost your metabolism (controversial)
Some people believe that drinking ice cold water will boost their metabolism and help them lose weight. I disagree. Maybe drinking ice cold water will help you burn a few extra calories but it will not get you the results you want.
You are not going to shed belly fat by drinking just a few glasses of ice cold water every day. I’m not convinced. If you disagree with me here, let me know in the comments. Maybe I’m wrong on this one?
#4 — Fasting will cause you to lose muscle mass — FALSE
This is a common myth and the reality is fasting done properly, will not cause you to lose muscle mass. Fasting is a great and simple way to lose fat fast.
In fact, a lot of my Turbulence Training Transformation Contest winners in past years used Brad Pilon’s 24hr eat-stop-eat fasting program in combination with my Turbulence Training for Fat Loss workouts and were able to achieve amazing results in just 12 weeks.
So there you go, fasting done right, will not cause you to lose muscle mass.
#5 — Crunches will give you abs. — FALSE
Tons of people believe that doing lots of crunches is going to get them abs. This simply is not true. Crunches are not the best exercise for your abs and they really are one of the most inefficient exercises you can do.
I can show you so many other exercises you can do that will get you six pack abs in just a few minutes every week and you won’t have to do a single crunch.
